All the best for 2024
All the best for 2024 with clips from Fire and Ice, accompanied by Sebastian Bach's epic music
A year full of events is coming to an end. A lot of things have gotten out of hand. And at the same time, a lot of hopeful things are happening on our planet.
This year we had the privilege of experiencing the primal power of creation in a very special way during the volcanic eruption near Litli-Hrutur (Iceland). That's why, as a New Year's greeting, we would like to take you on a little journey through fire and ice, accompanied by Sebastian Bach epic music.
The opposites fire and ice combine in the small clip. Their power and beauty are opposites and yet suddenly similarities become visible and create a fascinating connection. We wish you that opposites and “headwinds” don’t slow you down, but rather inspire you. That you find space to see the “other side” and discover its potential. That seemingly divisive things connect and strength flows.
Knowing that we can also be in touch with the one who created heaven, earth, fire and ice in the new year, we wish you a happy, fulfilling 2024.

Great article by Andreas Schiendorfer in the Schaffhauser Nachrichten.
Andreas Schiendorfer masterfully had a conversation with me about the new one Silence book summarized. His article appeared on December 21st in the Schaffhauser Nachrichten:
Paving the way – a special occasion on January 12, 2024 in Schaffhausen
A warm invitation to a live event with Daniel and Karin Bürgi, founders of the NGO Himalayan Life
Last year, a group of five cyclists from four countries covered 600 kilometers in the thin air of the high Himalayas - to draw attention to the living conditions of the people who work at this altitude under sometimes difficult conditions and to raise funds for the projects of Himalayan Life to collect. We had the honor of making a film about this sponsored bike run. Many of our customers and friends have followed the project and support Himalayan Life.
Now the unique opportunity has arisen to organize a live event in Schaffhausen with Dani and Karin Bürgi, founders of Himalayan Life:
Date
Friday, January 12, 2024 in Schaffhausen
Location
Liechtblick workshop, Amsler-Laffon-Strasse 1, Schaffhausen
4th floor
time
6:15 p.m. Doors open
6.30 p.m. Apéro Riche
7.15 p.m. Presentation by Daniel Bürgi with a short film
8:15 p.m. Interview and Q+A
20.45 end
Contribution to expenses for the Apéro Riche and drinks: CHF 39 per person. The amount can be paid on site in cash or via TWINT. Rounding up is permitted - the excess goes entirely to Himalayan Life. So that we know how many people are coming, we ask that you register by January 11, 2024:
I/we are taking part in the information event on January 12, 2024:
At Himalayan Life, helping people to help themselves is not just a slogan, but rather a lived reality. The organization builds schools, organizes sporting events across caste divides, offers programs to get street children out of drugs, founded the first PET recycling plant in Nepal, and is working to give small farmers better prospects. It is always about pursuing a long-term vision to genuinely improve living conditions. The organization practically exclusively employs locals in Nepal and thus creates jobs and imparts know-how to Nepalis. We were enthusiastic about this approach. On January 12, 2024, you will receive first-hand information about how development cooperation really makes a difference and how donations are used efficiently and directly to improve the living conditions of many people, especially children.

The world feels like it's turning faster and faster. Technological innovations often do not help us to have more time and leisure. On the contrary. The train of progress moves at an ever faster cadence.
We see it as a privilege that we can always escape this fast-paced life and spend time in places where the clocks tick slower and quieter. Where there is no cell phone signal beeping demandingly.
Photography teaches us to soak up these precious moments deeply. Only in this way can we discover the motives that the Creator offers us in his nature. We would like to share with you the amazement of the magical moments in distant countries such as Iceland, Alaska and Canada, but also in Switzerland and France. Hoping that somewhere in your everyday life you can carve out a little time and space to immerse yourself in the images. So that the vibrations of nature reach your heart and peace returns. Silence.
We are publishing the book in a limited edition of 299 copies. As always, you can secure No. 001/299 by bidding. There's more information about it here.

Leica Q3 – first test images
The Leica Q2 was (and is) a camera in a class of its own. Can Leica go one better with the Q3? Here is a first impression.
Last week the Leica Q3 was introduced as the successor to the Q2. The camera has a large fan base worldwide because it is a kind of mini power plant: despite its small dimensions, the Q series delivers incredibly good images. On the one hand, this is thanks to the excellent lens – a Summilux 1.7/28 mm – but also to the high manufacturing precision and the built-in electronics. The Q2 already set the bar high with 47.5 Mpx and 4K. With the Q3, Leica has gone one step further: 61 Mpx resolution, 8K video, plus - and Leica fans have been waiting for this for a long time - a swiveling screen...
Apart from the swiveling screen, the Leica Q3 is practically no different from the Q2. A lot has happened inside the camera (Leica press photos).
First impression
What sets Leica cameras apart is their excellent image quality, outstanding workmanship and ease of use. The Q3 is constructed in exactly this DNA. Anyone who has already taken photos with a Q practically doesn't have to get used to it. Only the buttons on the back of the camera are arranged slightly differently because more space was needed for the large folding screen. Because I only had the camera for a few hours, I went into our garden and collected impressions. Thanks to the wide-opening lens and the macro settings, you have a lot of creative freedom despite the fixed focal length. And thanks to the generous resolution, you can also do some cropping.
I am thrilled with the first results. Here are a few photos from this first spontaneous test, edited to my liking:
I hope I'll have the opportunity to test the Q3 in more detail at a later date and also try out the video functions. I created a few first small clips where I was particularly impressed by the precise autofocus, which is also suitable for filming. But as I said – I need more time for a serious test.

After the Corona break it's back, and how: the children's week of the Thayngen Reformed Church. The kids are really into it and the theater is already legendary. Theme this year: Queen Esther.

Magnolia 2023
My long-term photography experiment with the magnolia tree in our garden is entering its tenth round...
My “magnolia experiment” is entering its tenth round: Since 2014, I have been photographing the blooming magnolia tree in our garden every year – when I am at home. My theory is that, on the one hand, my perception changes and the style of the images is also influenced by the camera I use to create the images. I consciously try to use different cameras. Eight different cameras were used over the nine years.
This year I took photos with one camera and two fixed focal lengths and wanted to record a series that was consistent in terms of mood. For this I also worked with the new AI masks from Adobe Lightroom.
Here is the updated gallery with the latest shots. If you scroll down, you'll also see the older photos, all the way back to 2014. For the camera geeks, I've noted which camera I took the photos with.

Leica SL2 with the two fixed focal lengths SL 35 mm and SL 90 mm
I limited myself to two fixed focal lengths.
2022
Leica S3, Leica SL2, Sony a1
For the first time I took photos with more than one camera. Variety is the spice of life ;-).

Leica SL2
In 2021 I missed the time of flowering. Therefore the yield was relatively poor.

Leica SL
The Leica SL was definitely a boost for my photography. Mirrorless photography with targeted overexposure and underexposure was (and still is) a brilliant experience. In addition, the only lens available at the beginning - the SL 24-90mm - has a quality that I previously only knew from fixed focal lengths in the 35mm DSLR sector.

Impressions from the camera day course
For the first time, I gave a day course on the topic of “conscious photography”. Maybe something for you too?
The simplicity of conscious photography
In mine Photography course in Rasa TI I introduce participants to the three areas of camera mastery, handling light and image editing. The wish was repeatedly expressed that these modules could also be attended individually. I already had one last year Day course on image editing with Adobe Lightroom held, and now have four participants in one Day course on the secrets of conscious photography met. After this day, they were all able to understand what their camera does and how they can influence the image effect by setting the parameters. First there was a little theory, and then we started straight away with practical exercises in the 720-degree photo studio and, after dinner, in Schaffhausen at night.
Pictures above: The participants immediately put what they have learned in theory into practice.
At the end of the course day everyone agreed:
We now understand how a camera works and what we can influence with the different settings. Now it's about putting the knowledge gained into practice and practicing as much as possible.
After dinner we set out to delve deeper into the topic of “photography in the dark” and even experiment a little in Schaffhausen at night. The next course Getting started with conscious photography is planned for Saturday, May 18, 2024. If there is a lot of interest, I will hold another course in the fall (just send an email to us, if you are interested in a course in the fall). If you would like to be informed about new course dates, then subscribe to our newsletter.
Above: Some impressions and results from the nighttime stroll through Schaffhausen.
Below: The participants took photos of each other and immediately applied their knowledge of shutter speed, aperture and ISO in practice.
New short film about ALTITUDE
It's always exciting when another editor puts together a video using our material. Matthew Kostamo from Canada made a cool short film about ALTITUDE using our clips.
Versatile material
A video/photo project always creates a lot of material, of which only a small part ends up in the finished product. The editor's intuition and personal taste determine which clips are used.
That's why it was very exciting for me to see what another film editor did with the material from Daniel Rimann and me. Matthew Costamo from Canada has put together an almost five-minute short film about ALTITUDE for Himalayan Life. Some scenes were also used in the trailer/film I edited, others were not.
Matthew did a great job, and that's why I would like to show you his version too:
New homepage for personal photo projects
A new website for Peter Schäublin's personal photo and film projects
For a long time there had been a desire to develop my own, very simple website for personal photo and film projects. Now it’s here – the new one peterschaeublin.com homepage. Simple and with little text, but all the more pictures. Immerse yourself in this world of images and let yourself be surprised...
The distinction between personal and commercial photo projects is not always easy. Often a series of personal pictures is created as part of a commissioned project or vice versa. That's why certain motifs can be found both on the new homepage and in the Photo section of the 720 degree homepage.
